We offer training for Emergency Medicine trainees through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program (5 years) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (1 extra year of training after completion of a Family Medicine residency). We also offer clinical experience to medical students and residents from other training programs during their mandatory emergency medicine rotations.Our research groups are heavily involved in evidence-based medicine and have produced high-quality evidence-based research for over 20 years. Knowledge synthesis and translation activities have provided a platform from which to exchange valuable information that has been used to improve the quality of care delivered to patients in the ED in Alberta, nationally, and internationally.PositionWorking under the supervision of a physician or medical team the incumbent works on clinical-related projects providing project management, audit management and applying specialized research knowledge to provide overall management/coordination (especially Health Research Ethics Board [HREB] applications, amendments, renewals and closing). This includes building and maintaining relationships with health systems, community practitioners, researchers, research stakeholders, funding agencies and the general public.The ideal candidate will refer any unusual findings or problems related to the research or patient care to the physician. Interaction with patients in obtaining consent, and histories, discussing treatment plans or explaining procedures is an integral part of the activities. The ideal candidate will have sufficient medical-level training to operate independently. Skills gained through normal educational training will be sufficient for the ideal candidate to establish and/or set up steps and stages in the research or clinical areas involved.The purpose and objective of the activities may be to assess patients, collect data and/or record medical findings. Errors in taking histories or in recording data may be difficult to detect or go undetected and could affect the research findings. Public and/or external contact may occur, usually in conjunction with, or in support of, the researcher involved. Physical demands may involve lifting and/ or manipulation of patients while assisting researchers. Some physically demanding medical activities or procedures may be undertaken independently.Working conditions may result in exposure to noxious odours, contact with drugs or infectious diseases and body fluids of patients.DutiesClinical Research LeadOverall project management and coordination of research activities including:

  • Ensure all aspects of projects are performed according to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Tri-Council Policy Statement Guidelines (TCPS2), Health Canada.
  • Develop and implement work plans to achieve project goals and create, manage and track milestones and timelines;
  • Responsible for Health Research Ethics Board [HREB] submissions (initial submission, amendments, renewals, safety reports, applicable updates and study closure) and resolving all program issues addressed by ethics review;
  • Based on study protocols, establish priorities for the project for the life cycle of the protocol from implementation to close-out.

Management of Research Staff

  • Act as the first line of daily communication and direction for clinical research staff.
  • Review and assess workloads of research assistants and summer students, provide support and redistribute work as necessary.
  • Responsible for training and supervision of research assistants and summer students including on-boarding, study design and protocols and the full documentation needed for each specific study.

Research Coordinator

  • Coordinates various technical and non-technical support activities for a research project.
  • Completes study forms and patient histories to capture data related to the study or procedures being undertaken.
  • Assembles data that describes medical conditions, codes and/or classifies medical information, coordinates the assembly of data, oversees data input into manual and/or computerized record retention systems and may be responsible for regular updating and/or back-ups to maintain the integrity of material being gathered.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a minimum of RN or BScN certification and an active Alberta nursing license.
  • Knowledge and experience using ConnectCare and NetCare;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, communication and facilitation skills, including team leadership and management skills;
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivated;
  • Excellent organizational, time management, administrative and problem-solving skills;
  • Experience with policies and procedures at the University of Alberta and within AHS;
  • Working knowledge and experience in computer software applications (e.g., MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, REDCap, G-mail, outlook, internet) is essential;
  • NACTRAC Research Coordinator course will be required within the year along with certification;
  • Training and experience in project management is an asset;
  • Experience in research administration and budgeting is an asset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced training in epidemiology/research (e.g., MSc, MPH, MScN) is desirable;
  • Research experience in an Emergency Department/ICU preferred;
  • Training and experience in project management is an asset;
  • Experience in research administration and budgeting is an asset.
