Our Nuclear Response and Analysis Branch is looking for a Research ScientistINTRO
A new position is being created within the Nuclear Response and Analysis Branch of the Safety and Security Directorate within Science and Technology at CNL. The position is in the Nuclear Security Section which performs algorithm development, simulation, and analysis related to radiation transportation in support of a wide variety of CNL projects. Examples of potential applications include safety systems in support of reactor operations, reactor or fuel design, radiation protection, non-proliferation of nuclear materials, and nuclear disarmament. The Research Scientist in this position would apply skills in physics, mathematics, and computer science towards the development of novel techniques in this area of research, including computational modelling and analysis of physical systems, software and algorithm development, and data processing, analysis, and interpretation. Reporting of research results may include oral presentations, conference attendance, and written reports in internal documents or peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will work both individually and as part of multi-disciplinary teams in support of CNL projects. Additional responsibilities may include drafting proposals, project planning and leadership, and supervision.What will you be doing!

  • Planning, analysis and documentation of scientific, engineering and technical work

o Contribute to work planning for simulation or analysis, including estimation of time required for work by others in the same areas of expertise.
o Use or develop simulation codes, analytic methods or other professional tools to solve problems in the time estimated.
o Write and/or present analysis results in clear, error-free language in technical reports, or in presentations prepared for a committee or other forum as appropriate. Review and/or verify the results in the reports of colleagues.

  • Original scientific research and technological development in nuclear security, or nuclear systems and radiation.

o Prepare draft proposals for scientific analysis or related work on topics of interest to CNL management or external stakeholders.
o Lead project tasks for scientific work in nuclear systems and security, maintaining budget and adhering to schedule while preserving scope and quality of work.

  • Balance effort against other costs to optimize efficiency in work planning and execution.
  • Recommend opportunities and strategies for developing and acquiring resources for current and future demands.
  • Development of analytical or numerical algorithms to model, process, analyze, or interpret computational and experimental data.
  • May periodically be responsible for supervision of work by technologists or students.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • An honours Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant engineering or science discipline from a university of recognized standing, or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Along with having an honours BSc or BEng, a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience pertaining to research in physics, computer science or mathematics is required.
  • Relevant work experience in nuclear research or similar professional environment is an asset.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and demonstrate innovative approaches to problem solving.
  • Ability to obtain a secret/level 2 security clearance in Canada, specifically for the CRL site is required.
  • Knowledge of software specific to the field of radiation transport and interactions with matter, such as MCNP or GEANT4, and the background knowledge required to use them well.
  • Experience in developing analytical and computational models and algorithms.

Programming ability and experience suitable to the use and patching or adaptation of software for technical applications. Experience with Python, C++, and/or FORTAN are assets.

  • Knowledge of general-use software such as Excel and Word.
  • Comfortable using a UNIX/Linux computing environment.

Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. . CNL works with employees across our Canadian locations to enable remote work when possible.
