The Office of Research and Sponsored Projects (ORSP) safeguards and advances U-M’s research enterprise by providing its partners with efficient pre-award and non-financial post-award services for the compliant administration of externally sponsored grants, contracts, and ancillary agreements. Our office is growing and looking for experienced individuals to provide non-financial post-award services and oversight for the institution. The incumbent in this position reviews, negotiates, and accepts sponsored project awards for the University of Michigan, provides administrative oversight for those awards; and reviews and processes non-financial post award actions for compliance with sponsor and institutional policies and guidelines. This position has the responsibility and authority to review and agree to sponsor terms and conditions on behalf of the University as a project representative in the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects.
Under management of a Manager, Award Management, this position is responsible for the following:
Principal Job Duties for Senior Award Management Officer
Accepts and negotiates a wide range of sponsored research awards and agreements including those resulting from the most non-standard awards taking into consideration Principal Investigator’s (PI) needs and proactively identifying any special considerations. Reviews incoming award terms, flags and addresses unusual circumstances internally and externally, maintaining fair but firm positions to obtain optimum conditions for University and PI. Recommends award agreements for University endorsement and accepts awards using appropriate delegated signature authority. Reviews and processes non-financial post award actions for compliance to sponsor and institutional policies and guidelines. Monitors and communicates changes implemented by sponsors. Ensures compliance with University, federal and agency regulations, policies, forms and guidelines for the conduct of research.
Serves as a subject matter expert trainer. Represents ORSP in intra- and inter-university meetings. Assumes full level of contact with faculty and project teams. Handles complex issues with sponsors.
Focuses on more complex compliance issues such as research security and export controls and serves as a resource to more junior staff in this regard. Determines that all University and sponsor requirements have been met prior to University’s acceptance of awards.
Principal Job Duties for Award Management Officer
Oversees and ensures accurate and timely review of incoming award terms, flags and addresses unusual circumstances internally and externally, maintains fair but firm positions to obtain optimum conditions for the University and the PI. Responsible for accepting awards on behalf of the Institution or recommending for University endorsement if above designated signature authority level.
Provides assistance and guidance to University faculty & staff, usually one-on-one or in small group settings. Assumes direct contact with faculty as required.
Reviews and processes non-financial post award actions for compliance to sponsor and institutional policies and guidelines. Monitors and communicates changes implemented by sponsors. Ensures compliance with University, federal and agency regulations, policies, forms and guidelines for the conduct of research.
Required Qualifications*
Required Qualifications for Award Management Officer
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status: ORSP deals with export controlled information, the handling of which is regulated by the U.S. Federal Government and access to which is restricted to U.S. Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents.
Two or more years of experience performing similar job duties.
Required Qualifications for Senior Award Management Officer
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident Status: ORSP deals with export controlled information, the handling of which is regulated by the U.S. Federal Government and access to which is restricted to U.S. Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents.
Four or more years of experience performing similar job duties.
Desired Qualifications*
Applies for both Award Management Officer and Senior Award Management Officer positions
Central office experience at a university performing similar job duties.
MBA, JD, or similar advanced degree.
Experience in non-financial post-award related to various extramural sponsors, such as Federal agencies, state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and industry.
Working knowledge of sponsor software systems (e.g. eRA Commons, Research.gov, Proposal Central, etc.).
Familiarity with U-M policies and procedures related to research administration (including, but not limited to, accounting, purchasing, personnel, and regulatory compliance).
Experience providing excellent customer service.
Certification in Research Administration (CRA)
