We are looking for a Senior Conservation Manager to manage the conservation of a project that includes the conservation and digitisation of collections held by The National Archives. The first stage of this major project will be the digitisation of the original documents. This is an on-site role based at TNA, Kew, Richmond, TW9 4DU.Primary Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Manage and update the bespoke training package for Conservators, and Digitisation Technicians and Supervisors, ensuring it remains relevant to the condition issues likely to be encountered in the collections. Delivering the bespoke training package to the team including refresher training
  • Manage and update as required the delivery of all handling training in line with current TNA guidelines and according to the current standards.
  • Undertake Digitisation work and assist with imaging tasks during downtime from conservation work, ensuring high-quality images are consistently produced.
  • Upskilling Digitisation Operatives to undertake minor conservation treatments.
  • Purchasing and management of all conservation supplies and materials.
  • Supervise Conservation staff to ensure the highest quality of work is performed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Monitoring all throughput, staffing and service levels relating to conservation-based tasks and workstreams.
  • Liaising with TNA Conservation team as necessary.
  • Providing advice on all matters pertaining to conservation.
  • Carrying out regular quality assurance checks of the work of conservation and digitisation technicians.
  • Performing quality assurance checks of work by the conservation team.
  • Undertaking conservation activities as required – treatments that prepare records for digitisation, mould treatment etc.
  • Managing the process for any mould affected collection items ensuring Ancestry staff keep in line with TNAs procedures.
  • Liaise with TNA internal departments, including Facilities and the Document Production team, to ensure the smooth running of the space by reporting and monitoring issues, the transport of records, and maintaining effective communication across teams.
  • Take a leading role in managing staff well-being and organizing activities to foster a positive and supportive working environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • MA in Paper Conservation. A graduate from a recognised conservation or cultural heritage programme or appropriate work experience with a high standard of conservation knowledge, skill and practice beyond initial training with a demonstrable expertise in the preparation of collections for digitisation
  • Required, minimum of (3-5) years as a practicing paper conservator
  • Demonstrated experience and advanced knowledge in the treatment and preservation of historic paper-based collection
  • Excellent prioritization, planning, and organizational skills, and project management experience; attention to detail with dedicated follow-up
  • Ability to work and manage a team in an efficient manner
  • Experience and commitment to working in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
