Additionally, there will be onward training in chemical biology available to you to develop your skills and progress.We require this role to be based at Stevenage only.Job PurposeGSK’s Chemical Biology department supports the delivery of our early-stage pipeline of innovative medicines which is built on GSK’s strategic investment in human genetics and functional genomics.Working in partnership with GSK’s Research Units, our team of chemical biologists is accountable for the design and application of well annotated compound libraries for novel target identification and validation in disease-relevant screens. The department is increasingly interdisciplinary, integrating technical expertise in synthetic and medicinal chemistry, molecular cell biology, and biochemistry. To deliver on our growing portfolio, we are expanding to add technical capabilities which will aid the discovery of tractable targets and guide optimal choice of modality.In this role you will…

  • Implement strategies for selection and design of high-quality chemical probes for cellular phenotypic screening and develop strategies for target deconvolution, working directly in support of GSK’s expanding early-stage discovery pipeline.
  • Be integral to our efforts to identify tractable therapeutic targets from cellular phenotypic screens, through the application of chemistry and molecular pharmacology skills.
  • Influence the scientific and experimental strategies of the team and contribute to a culture and environment of scientific excellence.
  • Work in a collaborative manner on complex biological systems with scientists in other line functions, particularly the Research Units and Genomic Sciences.

Why you?Basic QualificationsWe are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • First or upper second-class honours degree in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology or a related field.
  • PhD/DPhil, or significant research experience, in the field of chemical biology / medicinal chemistry / molecular pharmacology or a related field. Candidates with some post-doctoral experience are also encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledge of, and strong interest in, phenotypic screening, design principles for chemogenomic libraries and strategies to validate hits from phenotypic screens.
  • Experience in the design, synthesis, selection and application of chemical probes to study biological systems.
  • Understanding and appreciation of cell biology / molecular biology techniques which can be used to characterise novel chemical tools for drug target identification and validation.
  • A strong track record of high personal productivity working at the chemical biology / cell biology interface.

Preferred QualificationsIf you have some of the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Knowledge or experience in molecular pharmacology.
  • Knowledge or experience of collecting, integrating, mining and analysing complex biological data to build testable hypotheses.
  • Coding experience (e.g. R, Python and/or SQL) for data analysis.
  • Interest and/or some experience in the application of computational methods to study pathways and identify targets.
  • Successful, collaborative experiences of working in integrated, multidisciplinary teams of e.g. chemists, cell biologists, biochemists, chemoproteomics scientists and computational biologists.
