Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Course# & Course Title: PHL440H: Clinical Bioethics (Winter 2025 Term at .5FCE)Course Description:This is an advanced study of topics in bioethics taught in conjunction with clinical bioethicists associated with the health care organization partners of the University of Toronto Joint Centre for Bioethics. This course is intended for Bioethics Major and Specialist students. The course explores both the theory and practice of clinical bioethics with the aim of deepening students’ insight into the normative ethical features of clinical policy and practice, the interplay of biomedical science, law and policy in creating and shaping ethical issues in clinical care, the use of bioethics theory, principles and concepts to analyze and assess ethical issues in clinical care, and the practical ethical reasoning entailed in identifying, understanding, and responding to ethical issues in the real-world healthcare settings.Course Learning Objectives:

  • To explore the theory and practice of clinical bioethics
  • To deepen insight into the normative ethical features of clinical policy and practice, including the interplay of biomedical science, law and policy in creating and shaping ethical issues in clinical care
  • To examine the nature and scope of practical ethical reasoning entailed in identifying, understanding, and responding to ethical issues in the real-world healthcare settings
  • To apply relevant bioethics theory, principles and concepts to analyze and assess ethical issues in clinical care
