Position Summary

The Informatics and Predictive Sciences (IPS) conducts applied computational research in areas that include genomic, structural and molecular informatics, computational and systems biology, patient selection and translational biomarker research, and broader fields including knowledge science, epidemiology and machine learning—across the full lifecycle of drug discovery and development and across all therapeutic areas at BMS.

The IPS team in Brisbane, CA is seeking a graduate intern with strong computational capabilities to join our team to analyze real-world, multi-modal data for cardiovascular diseases. To address unmet needs in the cardiovascular space, we are interested in discovering and developing treatment for patients that are non-responders to standard of care treatment. For this internship project, we aim to build patient profiles and machine learning prediction models for responders and non-responders using real-world data.  Specifically, we will focus on the internal cardiovascular patient cohort, which is a comprehensive multi-model, longitudinal dataset that includes clinical phenotypic genomic and imaging components for cardiomyopathy and heart failure patients. The output of this project will enable focused drug discovery efforts on non-responders of standard of care treatment. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in departmental and project team meetings to gain valuable insights into drug discovery and development process and interact with individuals with a range of scientific and pharmaceutical leadership backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Characterization of the cardiovascular patient profiles using multi-modal data (including WGS, clinical and imaging data)
  • Build and evaluate machine learning models to predict responder status using multi-modal data
  • Apply developed machine learning models to other datasets to infer responder status
  • Disseminate the results in the forms of presentation/reports/UI tools with stakeholders from various functional groups

Qualifications & Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics or a related filed.
  • Proficiency in a high-level programming language such as R or Python.
  • Experience working with common NGS data types, such as WGS and RNA-seq data.
  • Knowledge in machine learning/AI methods and applications.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills, and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience working with real-word data or cardiovascular diseases is a plus

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $29.00/hour – $35.00/hour.
