Our mandate is to provide opportunities for individuals experiencing disability to participate in physical activity. We do this by removing barriers to participation and working with the community to support education and leadership development.Position SummaryThe Steadward Centre is seeking up to three well-organized and highly motivated Summer Camp Counselors for the 2024 season. The positions will report directly to the Fitness and Recreation Manager. Our innovative Adapted Physical Activity (APA) camps combine motor skill development and creative movement in a manner that builds fundamental movement skills and develops physical literacy. We run a variety of camps to different age groups and ability levels, including sport and play based instruction. Camps will be designed to be a welcoming and positive environment for children and youth experiencing disability.Duties
- Ensure camps align with the principles and practices of The Steadward Centre;
- Ensure that our camps are operated and delivered in a high quality manner at all times;
- Work collaboratively with an Adapted Physical Activity (APA) Consultant to complete daily and weekly processes associated with camps
- Work collaboratively with the other members of the Camp Staff and an APA Consultant to deliver lesson plans grounded in APA theory and practice;
- Provide positive, creative and innovative instructional activities for all participants;
- Ensure a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all camp participants;
- Assist with set-up and take-down of facilities and equipment, and various administrative duties;
- Provide feedback to the Fitness and Recreation Manager with respect to participant progress, conduct, ideas to improve camp operation and delivery;
- Attend staff meetings as required
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children and youth experiencing disability
- Experience working in instructional group programming and camp settings
- Experience with promoting positive behaviours
- Theoretical and applied knowledge in Kinesiology, physical education, and sport.
- Previous experience in Adapted Physical Activity and/ or Para Sport
- Current Police Information Check
- Current Emergency First Aid, CPR-C and AED certification required
