Posting Close: August 8, 2024Position SummaryReporting to the Manager, Rooming House Project, the Supervisor, Peer Programs is responsible to ensure the delivery of Peer programing and support the development and sustainability of a new Peer Worker Program with Dixon Hall. The Supervisor, Peer Programs also supports peer workers, implements the collaborative aspects of the Dixon Hall’s partnerships with other agencies in the Peer Worker program, and aligns the daily activities of the peer workers with the mission, vision, and values of Dixon Hall.Duties and Responsibilities

  • Document daily activities of the peer worker team and submit detailed reports on a regular basis.
  • Provide ongoing guidance, coaching and support in peer workers’ day to-day job tasks.
  • Expect to deal with Peer workers in a flexible, non-judgmental way that balances the existing barriers in their lives while encouraging them to adopt more structure and to take on more responsibility.
  • Assist the Manager with mentoring, monitoring, and motivating Peer workers to uphold adopted standards and gain essential employment skills.
  • Provide scheduling support and life support as needed – ie: housing help referrals, connections to social support systems and schedule work accordingly.
  • Provide weekly supervision meetings to get feedback and assess skill and training needs for peers and/or program volunteers.
  • Pro-actively assist peers to identify and resolve workplace conflicts, challenges and disputes.
  • Explain and provide training for the functions of the peer workers’ job duties.
  • Assign roles and duties based on job description but also on skills and strengths of peer workers.
  • Assist management in expanding and developing peer program to reach into other areas of Dixon hall and community.
  • Track and monitor hours of peer workers according to program budget and data collection as needed and or required by funders.

Program Delivery

  • Coordinate with other programs in the Housing Services and across the Agency to schedule peer workers for broader social service work experience within Dixon Hall Housing Services.
  • Liaise, build relationships and network with the Dixon Hall Employment Services department team and other community agencies in order to access supports that are available to the Peer workers through Employment Ontario, Ontario Disability Support Program, Ontario Works and so on.
  • Meet regularly with program managers to evaluate and assess peer worker program progress and gaps.
  • Assess and identify the peer workers’ need for educational and skills training in order to provide appropriate and required opportunities.
  • Plan, identify, and resource educational and skills training for peers in group and/or individual learning environment; assist with skill development.
  • Create and facilitate Peer worker workshops that enhance their support system and allow for critical feedback to a developing program.

Human Resources

  • Supervise all peer workers within the Rooming House Project Peer Worker Program.
  • Facilitate training for peer workers in all required aspects of workplace Health and Safety (i.e. Provincial legislation and regulations, Agency policies and procedures) and ensure that workers adhere to and practice all health and safety standards (food safety, needle safety) while in the workplace.
  • Provide training and workplace orientation following a worker’s employment start date; explain the Agency’s policies and procedures following the completion of the onboarding for new employees’ process by the People and Culture team.
  • Coordinate and communicate peer worker position vacancies needing to be filled with the People and Culture team.
  • Design and implement regular work schedules to utilize peer work according to program needs and peer availability.
  • Assist the People and Culture team with developing and maintaining peer worker handbook.
  • Consult with the People and Culture team, as necessary, regarding disciplinary issues.
  • Implement and follow the terms of the Collective Agreement and all applicable employment legislation.
  • Report all health and safety concerns to Management.

Organizational Effectiveness

  • Work collaboratively with the Housing team, Community Development team, Employment Services department team, peer workers and program Managers to deliver and expand the peer program.
  • Identify gaps and successes in the Peer program as it relates to employment and skills training.
  • Monitor and adhere to budgets and agency policies
  • Maintain relevant data and documentation on program and peer work scope and duties
  • Attend meetings with agency and community stakeholders pertaining to the programs development goals or agency needs
  • Identify trends that could lead to further funding or program opportunities and communicate to managers as required
  • Be receptive and adaptive to an expanding program’s needs and gaps
  • Ensure that reporting is done in a timely fashion and in agreement with established deadlines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary Degree or equivalent work/educational experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience within the front line social service sector.
  • Knowledge of Harm reduction, food service and Community development.
  • Knowledge of Peer work and systemic barriers for marginalized people in accessing gainful employment.
  • Experience with program development and group facilitation an asset.
  • A progressive understanding of the pervasive systemic barriers that keep people in poverty and or houseless; committed to equity and social justice.
  • Exceptional understanding or trauma informed practice, strength based community building and issues that impact people who live in poverty.
  • A deep understanding of the benefits of Peer Work and systemic barriers that impact drug users and people with disabilities from finding gainful employment.
  • Previous experience with intensive case management, supervising and scheduling peers or volunteers.
  • Understanding of Social inclusion and the benefits of lived experience as essential to community based programming.
  • Strong ability to mentor and exchange knowledge with sound judgement and strong decision making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong ability to exchange knowledge.
  • Demonstrated capacity to operate under pressure.
  • Creative problem solving and organizational skills; able to coordinate multiple tasks and issues through prioritizing, delegation and follow through on deadlines.
  • Able to work in a quickly changing and expanding program requiring flexibility and multi-tasking skills.
  • Personal experience as a peer worker or lived experience of homelessness, addictions and mental health will be considered an asset.
  • Strong verbal and written English language communication skills; fluency in additional languages, relevant to the communities of service, will be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with personnel at all levels across multiple programs/areas.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent relations with community organizations, networks and funders.
  • Self-directed and independent, as well as proven experience in working effectively as an inter-disciplinary team member and in collaboration with other community professionals.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a ‘Clear’ or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.
  • Must have up-to-date vaccinations against COVID-19 with a vaccine that has been approved for use in Canada.
