Job description

DESCRIPTIONWe are looking for a Systems Development Engineer to design, build and maintain electrical ground support equipment at the Project Kuiper Payload Processing Facility. This candidate will connect satellites to ground equipment so batteries are charged and bits flow. The ideal candidate is someone who loves diving into satellite hardware and software technologies. We expect that our builders are comfortable around electronics and software, i.e. electrical engineers who love to code and software engineers who work on physical systems.People working here love to work on space systems and will always find time to step outside and watch a rocket launch. We focus on the immediate manufacturing needs of the day and think big about how to scale processing rates. We often take on challenging problems where solutions are not prescriptive. We move fast based on the information we have and pivot fearlessly when we learn something new.A bit about our project: Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.Key job responsibilities
We need a Systems Development Engineer to focus on instrumentation to connect, control, and monitor satellites during the last mile of manufacturing. This includes:

  • Develop and deploy Python code to collect instrumentation measurements and publish to custom satellite processing equipment
  • Update satellite processing test scripts and deploy new versions through code pipelines to satellite processing workstations
  • Write and execute electrical ground support equipment runbooks and acceptance procedures
  • Support manufacturing engineers by defining electrical test plans and setting test script requirements
  • Develop automated testing systems to increase satellite manufacturing processes
  • Collaborate with hardware and software design teams to triage and resolve operational issues
  • Assist in hiring and mentoring engineering team members
  • Support satellite processing facility and launchpad operations in domestic and international locations
  • Must be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand

A day in the life
A Test Rack Engineer is customer obsessed with the satellite manufacturing team. They collaborate with design and manufacturing engineers to ensure electrical ground support equipment (EGSE) is ready to support satellite processing. Each day is filled with something new. One day they may be designing new a software or hardware capability. The next day, they will be planning the required systems for the next launch campaign. As the satellite manufacturing cadence picks up, they ensure existing EGSE is healthy and triage issues so that the satellite manufacturing line is never down. The ideal candidate is comfortable in an aerospace setting and leads collaboration with other departments to reach the best solution to any problem. They are always eager to learn something new and delights customers by delivering to commitments. And, they always find time to step outside and watch the launch.About the team
The Test Rack Engineering team, located at the Project Kuiper Payload Processing Facility (PPF), is the electronics and software competency for the launch team in Florida. We provide electrical ground support equipment to our satellite processing zone customers: test racks, harnesses, instrumentation, and supporting software solutions. The satellite manufacturing teams look to us to own the electronic systems so they can fuel, integrate, stack and launch satellites. We often leverage other electronics, software, and networking teams to deliver core components; however, we hold ourselves accountable for diving deep into the systems we deliver. Here at Amazon, we embrace our differences.
