This role is integral to the success and growth of the East Term desk, where the focus is on generating and executing speculative trading strategies while managing risk. The Trader will be responsible for developing and implementing speculative power, gas, and options strategies in both cash and term markets, with a primary focus on the upcoming 18-month horizon.Due to the nature of this role, this position is full time in-office and is based out of new head office in Downtown Calgary. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic team and play a key role in shaping TransAlta’s trading strategy.We are willing to consider to relocation services for the right candidate.WHAT YOU WILL DOMaintaining a strategic focus on Eastern Power MarketsAchieving an annual profit and loss target of $2-$5 millionManaging a Value at Risk (VaR) allocation of up to $1 millionConducting analysis for new business lines and structured transactionsConducting fundamental research and generating trade ideas in power and gas marketsProviding backup support for Manager as neededWHAT WE NEED FROM YOUPreferred bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or MathematicsOver 5 years of pertinent market and trading experienceProfound understanding of Eastern ISO markets, power generation fundamentals, fuels, FTRs/congestionAptitude for rapid information processing and decision-makingExtensive expertise in modeling commodities derivativesProven capability to articulate strategy, risk assessment, and deal execution to colleagues and leadershipDemonstrated efficiency in time management for research, analysis, and continuous professional growthAdditional RequirementsThe successful candidate wil be subject to a background check as a condition of their offer of employmentWHAT WE OFFERWe offer our employees comprehensive and flexible benefits, competitive compensation, annual incentives, and a rewards program.
