If you answered yes, then this may be the job for you!Clearable Waste provides waste collection and final verification services and processing of all routine and non-routine clean waste, including recycling in accordance the defined Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) for the CRL site. Increasing volumes associated with the decommissioning of multiple facilities, site clean ups and new construction in support of the revitalization of the site have resulted in increased demands, and our waste operations continue to expand using industry best practices while seeking out new technology to improve safe, efficient handling of all our waste streams. CNL’s clearable waste operations mission is to ensure the safety of the public, staff and the environment in every aspect of waste processing to ensure all waste and recycling is verified as clean prior to shipment offsite.The Waste Analysis Facility (WAF) and surrounding areas are operated by a dedicated operations crew and technical staff who handle the day-to-operation of the facility, verification of the WAC, waste clearance criteria the performance of and processing of waste. This position is required to provide technical support to the existing day-to-day operation which include the operation of specialized equipment and to support other groups within Waste Services. CNL often requires the use of specialized instruments and techniques to that verify waste meets clearance criteria. As part of clearable was operation the setup, commissioning and operation of a variety of instruments which include but are not limited to, Gamma spectrometer, NaI detectors, bag monitors and bulk assay systems.
Clearable Waste Operation Technicians may also be called upon to support other areas under Waste Operations such as; Sort & Segregation and Waste Characterization Services both on-site/off-site.What you will be doing:

  • Be a member of a team to support the all aspects of Clearable Waste Operations and Waste Characterization Services.
  • Provide a review of waste assessments, Waste Identification Form (WIF) and Waste Enquiry form (WEF) as well as signing off for acceptance of Clearable Waste forms (once training qualification has been completed).
  • Communicate with customers, related departments, and trades, contractors to ensure all contingencies are accounted for, and the Waste Management program and other applicable program requirements are being met.
  • Liaison for waste generators, project teams and the final waste receivers.
  • Support setup, commissioning, document development and operation of key monitoring equipment such as Bulk Assay systems, vehicle and bag monitors (box counters).
  • Carrying out waste management activities, including completing the Class 7 & 9 TDG training to Qualify for Shipments (on- and off-site waste).
  • Document maintenance in accordance with Waste Management Operations requirements
  • Conducting routine safety inspections of equipment and the Facility.
  • Technical writing activities to develop a comprehensive suite procedures to document all clearable waste operational activities, equipment operation and maintenance and associated training documentation.
  • Review and assess analyzes results from assay equipment.
  • Accountable for executing assigned work safely, and in a manner that fully complies with the Facility.

Operations Quality Assurance (QA) Program and CNL’s accepted practices. * The Technical Officer is expected to be proficient in the safe operations of specialized monitoring equipment such as bulk assay, vehicle or bag monitors, liaise with Waste Characterization on the results of monitoring and support the training and maintenance of this equipment.What we are looking for:Education:Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, or equivalent formal education.

Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more than 3 years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or trainingKnowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Chemistry knowledge and training in setup, control, operation maintenance of assay instrumentation and equipment
  • Knowledge of industrial safety principles and possess a strong commitment to safe operations.
  • Knowledge of equipment calibration and maintenance aspects and understand the importance of Equipment QA/QC.
  • Use of modelling software.
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Strong technical writing skills to support documentation and training development need to support clearable and hazardous waste operations.
  • Possession of a valid Ontario general driver’s license.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of Waste Management Operations (WMO) objectives.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to align multidisciplinary requirements to ensure operational compliance to CNL’s functional support areas that impact Clearable waste operations.
  • Work with direction and moderate oversight.
  • Self-motivated to work to find solutions, to understand, trouble shoot and contribute to innovative ideas.
  • Gain understanding of waste program requirements and Clearable and Hazardous Waste Operations practically and administratively from point of waste generations to the completion of clearance requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvements to efficiency, effectiveness and safety into both administrative and practical operations.
  • Solicit, evaluate and use advice on technical matters from staff and from technical and safety support groups.
  • Make sound operational decisions and respond to upset conditions by making conservative decisions regarding safety.
  • Interact effectively and diplomatically with internal and external waste generators, service providers, and waste receivers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite such as excel/word
  • Strong aptitude for mathematics and chemistry
  • Must have, or area able to obtain an understanding of: WHMIS, MSDS, Capability to understand and follow company policies and procedures.
